White Pages
a drawing exhibition at the Pickled Arts Centre, Beijing (People's republic of China)
curated by Marco Antonini

WHITE PAGES   follows on the line of the "Wall List" group show that World Art media hosted at the Broadway Gallery, in Soho, NY, on November 04.These pages identify with a year of personal impressions and unexpected discoveries. A difficult, thrilling, revolutionary (for my lifestile, at least) first year as a New York resident.

What makes art desirable? What switches our attention from simple interest to personal involvement? The "Wall List" exhibit focused on these issues. I tried to walk on this border-lines gathering some of the best art that I met in the past year's shows. Art that interested me, captivated me, or just made me curious; artworks that survived in my memory and in my heart, resisting the pressure and winning in the competition with hundreds (if not thousands) of other artworks seen. Vocationally small, often intimate art. WHITE PAGES is the créme of the aforementioned "natural selection" process that I operated during last year. 6 artists that embody a trans-national feeling and attitude and suggest new takes and smooth variations on what art-critic Jerry Saltz defined "Termite Art", an art wich makes its rules, that slowly erodes all external stimula and influences to remix them into tiny debris' cocktails, that refuses or accepts depending on personal feelings and attitude.

Marco Antonecchia picks from american popular culture and imagery with a basterdized, as-seen-on-TV, attitude. The drawings of Diane Barcelowsky are short trips into brainy, often uncomfortable scenarios. Harrison Haynes explores past and present trough the lenses of personal memories and the formal filter of photographic reproductions. Arrington De Dyoniso 's art and music reflects his search for a higher spirituality trough wild quotation and fablistic imagery. The Drawings of Kelie Bowman reveal details and fragments of sometimes dark, mysterious   bedtime stories. Van Hanos ' art moves the viewer forward to timeless scenarios where witty details enrich compositions of outstanding emotional power and formal balance.

Residenziale ANIC

Suitcase Magazine is OUT NOW! check the availability of this awsome limited edition online at www.suitcasemagazine.com

Our Story (so far):

Our affair with the Residenziale (ResA, now on),started an year ago. Angela was working at a paper on the history and development of industrial dorms around Ravenna, and ResA revealed as one of the more fascinating structures. Still inhabited by few, ghostly tenants, the "Z" shaped, 1957 built dorm lied surrounded by the dull, oppressing environment of the ANIC chemical plant site: a near hell of humming background noises, steam and pollution (the same landscape that inspired the italian masterpiece "Deserto Rosso").After a series of photo sessions, field recordings and audio-video interviews with the tenants and historical/architectural research, ResA revealed in all its decadent beauty. The story of a community of outcasts (the building is located in the middle of nowhere, 4km. from Ravenna), colleagues and comrades sharing common routine, tied to their unsafe job, completely ignored by the near city. The poetic, dark-grey beauty of this site inspired us, and one of our main goals was to "reveal" the site to the broader community of Ravenna, and start a discussion plan on the eventual re-use of such an interesting (and well preserved) industrial structure. We truly believe this wouldn't be just industrial archeology.

A photo essay about the history and present oblivion of ResA, is out on Suitcase Magazine issue #1 (upcoming). A boston, based mag you can check at www.suitcasemagazine.com . The photo essay includes txts by Angela Longo, Marco Antonini and photos by Christian Contin, Simona Basilavecchia and Francesco Torlone.

Pool Of Radiance
curated by Marco Antonini

(...)the need for a getaway that can’t be fulfilled in everyday's reality, inspires fantastic, fablistic imagination. In visual arts, this mix of dark and fantastic aesthetics is developing into a truly interesting, sophisticated and rich phenomenon. The Fantasy universe, dominated by Tolkien's standards (which eventually go back to Wagner's "Ring Cycle", norse and teutonic mythology) seems to be a more credited starting point than any history book or museum department for many artists (...).

Rock>Action

is a visual arts exhibit. Artists will be chosen from the contemporary alternative rock scene (obviously according a wide meaning to the "alternative rock" definition...). The exhbit is curated by Marco Antonini, young curator of the MIRADA staff (for info about MIRADA activities: www.mirada.it).
The proposal of this exhibit is to focus on the visual work of artists well known in the musical field, hopefully revealing an hidden side of their artistic sensibility.
This programmatical choice comes from the assumption of the high quality level of the works of some artists (the ones selected for the exposition), a quality that is necessary to open the exhibition to a wider audience, out of the simple exposition of fans-only material.
The comparison between visual style and musical style of each artist, by the way, will be of great interest for alternative rock conossieurs and for music lovers in general.
The actual catalogue of the exhibit:

1. Mick Turner (Dirty Three)
2. Meira Asher
3. Cynthia Connolly
4. Geoff Farina (karate)
5. Jodi Buonanno (Secret Stars)
6. Arrington DeDyoniso (OldTimeRelijun)
7. Christophe Stoll (Nitrada/Motorambo)
8. Harrison Haynes (Les Savy Fav)

The place of the exhibition will be the SESTOSENSO gallery in Bologna (Italy) fom October4 to October26 2002. The city is perfect for this kind of event, being Bologna one of the youngest, arty and musically involved cities in Italy.
Anyway, Bologna is not the only spot for this show. Further shows are being programmed in Ferrara and Ravenna and we are looking for Galleries and Museums interested in optioning the event in Europe and in the U.S.A.
